Video: Get:Live Session #6: Do DAT

Welcome back to the Get:Live Sessions ladies and gentlemen! Sadly this is the last episode of Season 1, but thankfully we are finishing up with the dapper stylings of Do DAT.  DAT is unlike anyone else, but likes everyone else. Which is to say that he's an ardent supporter of Bay Area hip-hop, but also challenges it with his evolutionary approach to music.  Perhaps the best way to explain his sound and style is to say that he expertly blends the urban and urbane– just like 38thnotes tries to do. His approach is at once jazz-inspired, rebellious, witty, indie, and fiercely Oakland.

Most recently DAT dropped his Oakland In Blue album and has since been collaborating with a host of other Cali artists. You may have also seen him ripping stages with the likes of Zion I, Foreign Legion, Rappin 4tay, Brwn Bflo and Dynamic Truth in the last couple of weeks. And of course if you see the kid live, you'll see him rip a venomous freestyle every time. Pay your respects to the DAT and the Get:Band and catch up on the rest of Season 1 below!

Video: Get:Live Session #5: Rafael Casal

It is finally time to honor the mastermind of the Get:Live Sessions, Mr. Rafael Casal. Rafa is a gifted poet, director, writer, and creative force who just also happens to be a really dope emcee. His work has been showcased on 38thnotes many time before, but here he shines on the platform that he helped create. Backed by his crew of shirtless hooligans, known collectively as The Get:Band, Casal goes in on his record, "B.A.Y." Chudwudi Hodge mollywhops the shit of the drums with expert execution, and Rafa articulates his allegiance to the Yay with eloquent locution.

Like his group mate Diggs, he spits rapid fire without sacrificing timing, cadence or wordplay. The fast rapping is not covering up a lack of depth or talent either, rather it is enhancing the dopeness already there. If you haven't been keeping up with the Get:Live Sessions, start clicking links and cranking speakers. And if you have been, be forewarned that next week's episode featuring the always dope and debonair Do DAT will wrap up Season 1 of the Get:Live Sessions. Worry not though, we will be back soon and with a vengeance.

Video: Get:Live Session #4: DaVinci

Salutations beautiful people and appreciators of good music. We are back with the latest installment of the Get:Live Sessions, this time with Fillmoe thorobred DaVinci. The San Francisco emcee took many by surprise with his debut album The Day The Turf Stood Still– a vivid portrayal of a gentrifying Fillmore district. He has garnered praise for his ability to paint the picture of gritty city life and make street music without making hood music.

“I’m from where hate is power and love is a weakness
—you do wrong the right way they call you a genius.”

Here the west coast emcee with the east coast sound translates his dope record "Concrete Jungle Juice" into something live and epic with the GetBand. Stay tuned for an insightful interview hosted by Daveed Diggs that delves more into the urban renewal theme that defines the album.

Also check out 38thnotes Executive Editor Niema Jordan's exclusive interview with DaVinci at Troubl.org, in addition to one of my favorite music videos of the past year, "Ben."

Video: Get:Live Session #3: Daveed Diggs

Daveed Diggs is the best Oakland rapper you might not have heard of. I've said it before and I'm saying it again. To lend a little creedance to this claim, check your boy out on the 3rd installment of the Get:Live Sessions hosted by the Get:Back Crew. Watch the verbal wizadry and then the next time you see the Jimi Hendrix'd out Bay Area emcee, give him daps.  With that said, I'll turn it over to Rafael Casal of the Get:Back to let yall know more.

Daveed Diggs is a new rising force in the Oakland Rap scene. One of the frontmen of Bay Area band The Getback, Diggs wields his powerful lyricism and hypnotic cadences like only a true Oakland-raised MC can. Much of his delivery feels like an instrument itself, riding over bass-heavy beats and reinforced by his witty content. With his upcoming debut album "Small Things To a Giant" set to drop this spring, Daveed Diggs is pushing an impressive line in 2011, giving a new sound in Hip Hop to represent his home turf. Stay tuned, and enjoy "I Feel Like" Composed by The Get:Band and written & performed by Daveed Diggs.

Video: Get:Live Session #2: Nio Tha Gift

In Episode 2 of the Get:Live Sessions, Nio Tha Gift stops by to record his hit record “Grateful.” With the original Taj-directed music video, Nio painted a stark portrait of success against all odds, and with the Get:Live session we see a lush live interpretation by The Getband.

Nio is a young emcee with an old soul and a story to tell. From humble beginnings in Richmond, CA to international acclaim in China, and back again, the emcee has seen a lot, and seen it through a rather sophisticated lens. Come inside the studio with Nio Tha Gift as he gives us a taste of his rapping and singing prowess. Then stick around for an intimate in-studio interview with the Get:Back’s glowing first lady, Ms. Chinaka Hodge. For more information on the Get:Live sessions, click here

We here at 38thnotes would also like to extend our congratulations to Nio for the birth of a healthy baby boy. We need more fathers out here, and are sure that Mr. Antonio Ramos will be all that and more. Congrats!
