On "Beautiful/ Ugly," Oakland representer Raashan Ahmad wanders the streets of Paris over a laid back jazzy instrumental put together by Headnodic. Though the track's Crown City Rocker-esque vibe is carefree and cosmopolitan, the content is not. Ahmad speaks on a host of issues such as human trafficking, homelessness, gentrification and urban violence.
He is without a doubt rapping about the world as a whole when he says it's "too beautiful to hate, and too ugly to love." He is relaying all of this from the boulevards of Paris, France after all. Even amongst the most beautiful cities, there are struggles, and even amidst the most debilitating struggles, there is beauty. All-in-all Ahmad leaves us feeling okay; albeit a little jealous that we aren't traipsing along the Seine at this very moment. Enjoi
