It's that time of the month again for 38thnotes to present the best Bay Area hip-hop and R&B of the previous month. This November edition of The Bay Abridged is the most somber tape we've ever released, with topics ranging from the sentencing of Oscar Grant's killer Johannes Mehserle to battles with drug addiction and loneliness. But perhaps most prevailing is an undying drive to overcome trials and tribulations and emerge victorious. By the end of the mixtape you'll feel like you're chilling on the mountaintop as the treacherous terrain fades away below you. Or at the very least you'll feel accomplished as you cruise around town with the heater on and the sunroof open.
The Bay Area is known for hype party music, but the depth of emotion offered up on this chapter of The Bay Abridged speaks to the range and emotional capacity of left coast artists. And while the vibe is decidedly more wintry, there is still an eclectic group of artists contributing this month, including Bay Abridged newcomers Mara Hruby, Fear & Fancy, DB, Lyrics Born and Lil B.
We are a resilient bunch of underdogs out here in Northern California. And as we continue to make a case for ourselves month in and month out as a legitimate hot bed of good new music, we also weather troubles that are both personal and political in nature. This month was especially hard in the wake of Johannes Mehserle's bullshit 2 year sentencing in the murder of Oscar Grant. Luckily, artists didn't just act as opportunists, they acted as members of a community for a cause that's deeper than music. We hope you can relax, reflect and rejoice a bit as you listen to this latest batch of love and pain from our local artists.
And without further ado, we present to you, The Bay Abridged: November. Special thanks to Daghe + Digital for the cover design! Track list and DL link after the jump!
