“Bangerang!” was the rallying cry of Peter Pan’s Lost Boys in the 1991 movie Hook, but it is now the official call of Bay Area hip-hop crew 40Love. There is one obvious difference between the San Francisco foursome and the Lost Boys however: a girl named Haze. And with fellow MC G-OFF, producer Mikos, and DJ Whooligan in tow, Haze sings, spits, and swoons her way over the group’s signature subterranean bounce.
Where Haze is melodic and agile, G-OFF is strong and steady. And where Mikos’ production is experimental and soulful, DJ Whooligan’s scratching and mixing are classic hip-hop. Being MCs, Haze and G-OFF get top billing, but it’s Mikos’ synth-heavy soul of keys, vibes, and bass that defines 40Love’s sound. . . Click here to continue reading
