Oscar Grant Hearing & New Kev Choice Song

It has been 10 months since the Oscar Grant killing, but today is a big day for Officer Mehserle and the murder charges that are being brought against him. At noon there was a press conference a lot of local leaders and community members attended and at 2pm there is a hearing to determine whether the case should be held in another county.

Mehserle's attorney claims that the former Bart officer cannot receive a fair trial in Alameda County due to the outrage many Oaklanders feel about the situation. The main reason that Mehserle's camp wants the trial moved is because they believe the racial divide in the community is too big, and the relationship between the police and the locals too strained. I agree that a lot of people already have their mind made up, but you're telling me you can't find anyone in Alameda County without an anti-police bias? I don't believe that.

My biggest opposition to the location change is that the murder happened in Oakland, why should they move it some where else? This murder impacted our people and our community, not Contra Costa or any other county. He should have to answer to a group of peers in the location where he fatally shot Mr. Grant.
Coinciding with this press conference and the potential venue change, Kev Choice has released a song called "Hopefully" that speaks directly to the Oscar Grant killing. I am glad to see that artists have not forgotten about the killing and the social problems that are going on in our city. After the killing on New Years Day, everybody and their mama wanted to release a tribute song, but as time passed, silence took over. Now with the trial quickly approaching, we must stand up together and let everyone know that we have not forgotten. Food for thought and a song for dessert.

Kev Choice's Michael Jackson Tribute Tonight!

From the mouth of Mr. Kev Choice

Most of us saw the BET Tribute (ehhhh), and the Memorial was phenomenal....now come check out the hottest Live Band in the Bay Area, "Kev Choice Ensemble", as they pay tribute to arguably the greatest entertainer and artist of our time, Michael Joseph Jackson.

Kev Choice, recently named "BEST MUSICIAN" by the "East Bay Express", and his ten-piece ensemble stretch the boundaries of hip-hop/soul/r&b/funk/jazz/classical/ and beyond. The musicianship, energy, and passion has garnered rave reviews throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Band members have played with the likes of Lauryn Hill, Goapele, Too Short, Bilal, The Coup, Bobby Brown, Martin Luther, DJ Quik, and more. Some come from the church, others the jazz world, the studio, or the conservatory, but as one, they are a powerful force of music to be reckoned with, under the direction of Kev Choice, a classically trained pianist and potent Hip-Hop lyricist.

This show, at The Shattuck Down Low in Berkeley is the first in a series entitled "Tribute", where every month the band will pay hommage to a different artist, a specific album, or a certain genre. With the recent passing of Michael Jackson, Kev Choice thought it would be timely and appropriate to honor him with this first edition. "MJ's music and influence is still heavy in all our hearts and minds and we seek to bring about the feelings and spirit his music evoked in all of us tonight!! The media keeps looking and digging up dirt on his death and the circumstances, we only look to honor his musical legacy and strive towards his high standard of excellence!"-Kev Choice

Why The Bay Needs to Support Kev Choice

Greetings Bayliens, today I have a few questions for you. 1. Have you ever seen a classically trained pianist rapping? 2. When was the last time you went to a hip-hop show and saw a full-fledged 10 piece ensemble fusing Jazz, R&B and Hip-Hop? 3. How often do you listen to local hip-hop and hear real talk about shit you can relate too? If you found yourself shaking your head in response to any of these questions, then you need to listen to Kev Choice.

Kev Choice was the band leader for Lauryn Hill during her attempted comeback a couple of years ago and is an integral part of Too $hort's new super-group Town Bizness. Choice is a Skyline High School grad with a masters degree in music and a wide range of artistic abilities. The dude can rap, lead a band, throw down with jazz musicians and play some mean Tchaikovsky. His Bailout mixtape dropped last year, but it was widely slept on. So I am encouraging yall to check it out now- the whole get down is raw! Here are a couple more tracks and the whole mixtape gratis. Help bring good live music back to Oakland!!
