Review: Netta Brielle: Love, Pain & Music

Netta Brielle is a favorite around these parts. She's nice, has great energy, and makes music that makes folks want to dance. The 80s is written all over her and pop has a clear influence on her style, but Love, Pain & Music isn't a tribute to an era. Instead it's a collection of tracks that Netta has recorded during the last few years. There are tracks from her first EP Electrik Rebel Sounds, songs that she's leaked on the 'nets including "Pushin Away", and some unreleased joints.

During a recent interview with Street Is Talking Radio, Ms. B emphasized that this was a mixtape and not an album. Love, Pain & Music is her way of releasing tracks that she's been sitting on and preparing for the release of her new EP slated to drop in February. But here's the issue: Buried in this mixtape is an EP that would show what her team recognizes: Netta Brielle has the makings of a pop diva, but a voice that has more depth than the current pop standard allows.

The line between holding back for the radio's pop palate and showcasing your vocal talent is damn near impossible to toe. There's the risk of sounding like the run-of-the-mill pop artist or sounding like a pop artist trying too hard to sing for real. In most cases Netta finds the balance (see "Electric Luv") to also highlight her beautiful voice.  When she leans more towards R&B a la "Takeover" and "Girlfriend #2," you get more of a glimpse of what she's working with vocally.

Overall Love, Pain & Music is a cool mixtape with some really strong tracks that have us anticipating Netta's next level. Also be sure to check out 38thnotes and Warriors World's exclusive interview with Netta Brielle HERE.
