Erk continues to build on the success of his regional smash "Right Here" by releasing an EP of the same name. The eight song albumette is a well crafted collection of tracks that gives you a great idea of what Erk has to offer. For those of you are more familiar with his recent single than his previous body of work, you will be in for a surprise. That's because Erk is more than a auto-tuned sensation. He is a dope rapper, a talented producer and an all-around good dude.
There isn't a weak link on Right Here, but my personal favorites are "Can't Let You Go," "Make You Love Me," and "Married 2 The Money." Beautiful melancholy strings and a soulful sample lay the foundation for a heartfelt tug-of-war between a long-term tumultuous relationship and the prospect of success on "Can't Let You Go." This will surely resonate with anyone who has had to negotiate hustle and love, or had to face a heartful addiction to someone you had to leave.
"Make You Love Me" is Erk's musical Thug Motivation 101. That is, it's his hustle anthem for how he's gonna take over the game. "Maneuver through the game Scot-free, watch me/ I jump over squares, you know, Hopscotch, Monopoly." It is a requisite track for any rapper, but Erk doesn't pretend he's achieved a status he hasn't, he just gasses off the hunger. "Rather be the underdog than the kitty cat/ Im so raw, fuck the world, no jimmy hat."
"Married 2 The Money" sounds a lot like a love song lyrically, but is actually an extended metaphor about how a little money can help a man. If you're wary of the wasteful "make it rain" excess that hip-hop tends to trumpet, don't trip, this isn't that. It's not materialistic, it's realistic. We need money to succeed in this world, and Erk has dedicated a soliloquy to his baby. "I recite my vows, kiss my wife / I get my cake, somebody throw my rice. I'm married to the money."
If you've been following Erk closely you may have already heard "Make It Wetter" with London or "I Get It" featuring Traxamillion, but both are solid tracks that fit perfectly on the tape. Right Here Tha EP is solid top to bottom and even offers a clean version of the title track, which many will be juiced about. Something about the smooth vibe of the track get's a bit tripped up with the F word dropped all over it, but for the sweetheart's out there who would rather be loved than fucked, you're in luck!
This is Erk's first foray into selling music (a couple singles aside), but you can't do much better for $3.99. So next time you're trying to cobble together a meal on the Dollar Menu, remember how much happier you'd be with a solid tape from a dope rising star that won't give you bubble guts. Erk just released The Hood Nerd 2 mixtape for free, so show Erk some monetary love and support good local music. Cop it HERE
