Though he was a resident of Hayward, Oscar Grant has come to symbolize the injustice, violence and distrust that has long defined police-community relations in Oakland, CA. Much has been said and written about Oscar Grant's murder and Officer Mehserle's subsequent misdemeanor charge, but not much has been done. In the spirit of activism, rapper Young Gully and journalist Pendarvis Harshaw have spearheaded the Grant Station Project, a campaign to rename the Fruitvale BART station after the late Oscar Grant. This movement may seem more like a matter of semantics than justice to some, but getting the systems that endorsed his execution to recognize him, would be a step in the right direction.
Toward this end, and in the hopes of remembering the legacy of Oscar Grant, Young Gully has penned an entire mixtape about the festering issues between the community and the police. He speaks from experience, enlists poets, family members and even channels Oscar himself to help tell the story that Oakland has had on the tip of its collective tongue for far too long. This mixtape is an amazing showing for Young Gully–adding depth to an already vicious mouthpiece. Whether you like hip-hop, the community or both, this is a must have. Support Young Gully, the Grant Station Project and long overdue justice in Oakland.
