New Goapele: "Milk & Honey"

Oakland's favorite daughter swoons her way over a smoothed out new-age jump-off track on her latest offering, "Milk & Honey." The song is as smooth as the title infers, but is beautifully layered with more electronic elements too thanks to Bedrock's solid production. Goapele's voice has a timeless quality that is both silky and smokey, but her music feels very rooted in the present. If "Milk & Honey" is any indication of what her new album holds, Ima have it on repeat for a long time. Check it out below.

I'm actually disappointed. I was expecting something really new sounding - innovative and explosive. She also killed me with the auto tune. Thats just awful. I would expect someone of her stature to steer clear of that. No question Goapele can sing, her voice is sweet, and I have love for her as a more authentic artist, but when it all comes down to music and music alone this is an unoriginal mediocre cut.

unoriginal, mediocre, awful? Guess we are listening to two different things.

I understand not liking the auto-tune, but I dont think its used poorly. There is a stigma regarding auto-tune these days because the market has become so saturated with it, but it itself isn't the enemy. U can play any intrument poorly. Ever been to a 10 year old's violin recital? T-Pain and them turned the vocoder to zero and made it gimmicky for anyone to touch it at all. I dont think thats fair. Even Stevie Wonder used auto-tune sometimes.

And Im all for innovation and explosive ass music but artists aren't chameleons that will revolutionize the game every album. I think this is a bit of a divergence for her, but you have to remember that she has won a fan base based on her past music, She has a particular sound that audiences like- to change that up hella much is to fuck with a winning formula. That said, its great to see artists develop and grow album to album. Lets see what the rest of her album sounds like and then we can have that convo, but I like this song

Auto-tune or not, that song is hot, and IMO that's all that matters. The song sounds great. If I had one complaint its only that the bassline comes in a little late for me, I wish it came in earlier. But overall, great song.

Love Goapele's vibe....Not a huge fan of auto-tune because EVERYBODY is using it. This is actually one of the only songs I have heard recently where the auto-tune is not over used or used as a substitute for actual singing. I like this joint. I want to hear the whole cd.
