38thNotes Presents: The Bay Abridged Mixtape: January

Good evening beautiful denizens of the Bay Area proper. 38thnotes is back again with the latest installment of The Bay Abridged mixtape. The January edition is an eclectic complilation featuring the best Bay Area hip-hop and R&B to come out of the region in January of 2011. Last month's mix was admittedly a bit "hood," but this month we're bringing it back with an amazing variety of local artists and songs. 

There is house-inspired hip-hop, rap/folk fusions, old school R&B flavors and of course some bangers brewing in the pot, making this edition particularly funky. So funky in fact, that we had to throw Humpty Hump's ghetto-fabulous Groucho Marx glasses on the cover (designed by Daghe+Digital). And if we just lost you with that blast from the past, study up young squires!

Happy New Years loyal readers, watchers, participants and purveyors of local hip-hop culture! 2011 will be a tremendous year, but there's no rush to forget the past either. That's because the final chapter of 2010 had some great music pulsing through our veins. We don't post a tremendous number of individual mp3s, but that's because we love curating a great listening experience for yall. Thankfully there are a host of our sister sites like Thizzler and The Bay Is Back that provide you with up to the minute slaps, but our take is an abridged one, hence the mixtape name. We whittle down the month's releases and leaks to craft a concise collection of the best the Bay has to offer each and every month. 

This is our 8th official Bay Abridged release, spanning the last 7 months of 2010 and including a special edition tape commisioned by the Twitter Conference in San Francisco this year. The December 2010 edition has something for everyone. There's hip-hop, hood shit, pop, R&Bay and even a taste of comedy. With that said, you should download it, slap it, pass it to your friends and roommates and even shoot a few choice cuts your mom's way. 

38thnotes is not just here to be a local hub, but also to spread Bay Area hip-hop culture to the nation and world. Our art is not just good for local art, we believe that it is good by any standard, and as such, we should not be ignored. So help us spread the word via the music, come to the events and give us feedback in the comment sections. The Bay is a muhfuckin problem. It's time the world learned.

As it is our mission to present the best of the Bay at every turn, we curate a monthly testament to the talent brewing here. If ever you doubted that this series could sustain itself, rest assured, it is as dope as ever. The October edition features a wide array of local talent from pop princes The Cataracs to the funked out neo-soul of Chris Turner. There are some new faces here and some talented Bay Abridged veterans as well.
