1st Place is perhaps best described as a Cali stoner making Sublime inspired hip-hop. The rap-rock ramblings of the former Federation member known as Stressmatic are inspired by both Bradley Knowles and Too $hort; and it somehow works. It's a far cry from his hyphy beginnings to be sure.
In fact, his new style is more likely to be the soundtrack to a skater’s quest for grind rails and weed in Santa Cruz, than to an East Oakland sideshow. He’s still making Cali lifestyle music, but this time around when 1st Place slides through your city he’ll probably be doing so in an old Jeep with trailer trash white girls and a bottle of Jack.

This grunge rap evolution has been occurring for a few years now, but just recently 1st Place aka TJ resurfaced as Stressmatic in E-40's new video, "My Lil Grimey Nigga." Was he just putting his old costume on for fun, or will he proceed as a bit of a hip-hop chameleon? I guess if both the streets and beaches are listening you might as well speak accordingly.
