Rappers have an obsession with keeping it real and never changing. These claims are usually referring to how “hood/grimey” a rapper will remain even after having money and nice things. It’s all a little strange and unrealistic really. In actuality, there are few things less real than trying to maintain hood credentials after experiencing social mobility. I believe it was 50 who said, “If the money ain’t changed you, then you ain’t made enough.” It is true that money will change you in certain ways, but for League510 “never changing” has less to do with socio-economics, and more to do with maintaining their core values and beliefs. To this point, Mr. Knowitall remarks, “They say never say never / so I may change, but Ima do me forever.”
"When we started writing the verses we wanted the song to tell the story of the humble artist, one not consumed by glitz and glamour." –TK of League510
The League is widely renowned as a crew of Oakland originals with boundless energy, crazy live antics and an eclectic sound. They are always a bit out of left field, and challenge the turfed-out stereotypes of East Oakland rap. On their latest single, “Never Change,” they promise to continue to be unique and humble artists who stay true to themselves, regardless of how their surroundings change. That is a promise we can hopefully all keep.
Peep the Brian Storm-directed visuals for “Never Change” below, documenting a day-in-the-life of the League. Also, keep your eyes peeled for their forthcoming album To The Beat, which will drop later this year on Clear Label Records.
