Video: Catching Up with iLL-Literacy

For the uninitiated, iLL-Literacy is a creative cadre of artist activists who fuse funk, hip-hop, spoken word, campus organizing and viral know-how to challenge the status quo. They explain below:

For us, that means rethinking how music is produced and distributed, how a live show is performed and experienced, and how creativity is used in the classroom and beyond. The result over the last five years of touring and teaching has been iLL-Literacy’s campaign to unleash Imagination. We make music, perform and collaborate with students and faculty across the country to build a culture of innovation.

This means that Dahlak, DRZZL and N.i.C. do a lot of traveling, philosophizing, advising and music making. In fact, they are currently living in Puerto Rico while they record their album iB4the1. Below, is a taste of what they've released from the project so far, but that doesn't begin to scratch the surface of all they represent and do. Click the jump for a poem by Dahlak, a trailer to their new album and an intro to their "Imagination Rationale." If you're a bit intrigued by this eclectic trio, you should be!

iB4the1.1 by iLL-Literacy

Above: Dahlak connects hip-hop's bangin ass beats and penchant for disrespect with our subsequent obsession with misogyny and our lack of meaningful intimacy in a poem called "I Know You Like It Rough."

Above: The Trailer for iLL-Lit's iB4the1 album entitled "The Process." The piece was written and performed by Dahlak and edited by Drzzl.

Above: DRZZL breaks down iLL-Lit's Imagination Rationale, which encapsulates the work they do around art and activism on college campuses. We'd tell you more, but then we might have to X you.
