New Music: Mara Hruby: From Her Eyes EP

Mara Hruby's first solo singing performance was at Monday Soul. It was her birthday and folks packed into Oakland's Air Lounge to celebrate. That was the evening that many of us went from recognizing her as a dancer to viewing her as the young lady with the vintage style, acoustic sound, and ill rendition of Mos Def's "The Panties."

"From Her Eyes" is the first official release from Mara Hruby. On the seven track EP, Hruby remakes songs by men from her perspective. The covers include Bob Marley's "Is This Love" and "Alright" by Jamiroquai. What stands out most about the collection, is Mara has managed to take songs that many of us know and truly make them her own. If you checkout her tumblr, you get a peek into her process for the album. She also includes the inspiration between the songs.

Here are her notes on "The Panties":

“The Panties” is on Mos Def’s album “The New Danger” and it was written by the man himself.  To me, he is one of the few rappers that can release full songs where they sing and I enjoy it without blinking twice, in fact, I close my eyes. Mos Def has a powerful sound to him that is distinctly unique. What I aimed to do with this cover, is communicate, through song, the way that I take in his original.  This is the last song on my cover album and it completes the story I’m telling, song by song, of music by men “From Her Eyes”.
