"I kinda wanna go, but I hella wanna stay / Smoke fuchsia glaze and live in the Bay," Ka'ra Kersey sings on "Fuchsia Glaze." As I've grown up, left to live elsewhere and returned home to Oakland, I have felt these sentiments many times over, and watched countless others battle these same emotions. And that is because the Bay Area is simultaneously one of the coolest and most beautiful places on earth, and one of the most sad and demoralizing. The Oakland Bay Area is a beautiful struggle and that often results in a love/hate relationship with those who grow up here.
We are coming up on Winter break, when those of us away for college and work will return home to again be seduced by the easy gaits and rhythms of Bay Area living. You kinda wanna go and spread your wings... but you also hella wanna stay in the Bay and enjoi all that you have romanticized in your absence. It’s a trade-off, but you can do both. I recommend leaving long enough to grow up, mature and appreciate all that you’ve taken for granted. Then come back and make us better. See you soon!
