Some of the most ingenious art emerges at the intersections of forms–those muddled gray areas between mediums or genres that incorporate all the best and leave the rest. And that is exactly what Adam Theis has done with the hip-hop symphony known as the Jazz Mafia. The 60 person ensemble fuses blaring horns, luscious strings, spoken word, singing and emceeing to form a delicious gumbo of gritty hip-hop and swing-era jazz. The end result can rock the boulevard or the Palace of Fine Arts, as the Jazz Mafia did last year in San Francisco.
This Sunday they will be returning to the stage at Yoshis SF as a slightly smaller 45 member collective. I have to doff my cap to Adam Theis for bringing together so many folks for one project, and then making the end result so potent on top of that. Check out a cut by the collective and Lyrics Born above, in addition to footage of a live performance below. This is something you don't want to miss, so get out to Yoshis this Sunday!
And to download their entire Brass Bows and Beats live album, please click HERE and look to the right side bar in the resulting window. Enjoi!
Daps to ThizzlerOnTheRoof for the heads up!
