Walking a path cobbled by the jazz greats and hip-hop legends before him, J. DaVinci is bringing a film noir authenticity back to San Francisco's western addition. The Fillmore emcee's ominous tales and hungry demeanor combine with his dark and soulful production to make his free debut album, The Day The Turf Stood Still, a stunning success. As ballsy as it is to say, the feel and appeal of his street-oriented sound reminds me a bit of an illmatic-era Nas.
DaVinci's latest video, "Ben," expertly recounts his love/hate relationship with the big face hundreds that govern his world, but it is Marcus Ubungen's cinematic vision that makes it the triumph it is. DaVinci is dope, but with the guidance and grustle of his Sweetbreads Collective team, he has a leg up on the competition en route to becoming the next big thing out of the Bay Area. No disrespect to San Francisco's hip-hop pioneers, but the Fillmoe has a new sheriff in town. Fin
