For all of us who have to balance our art with our check books on a daily basis, this is for us. For all of us who have to compromise our passions to pay rent, this is a tribute. For all of us who grind all night on what we love, only to push through the next day to do what we need, this is our song!
Daveed Diggs of The Getback has fashioned an anthem for the side-hustlers and midnight marauders; a song that represents the dueling lives we lead to feed both ours hearts and stomachs. The video, directed by Dan Truog and edited by Ian Montgomery expertly juxtaposes these worlds in a way that is simultaneously realistic and fantastical. Digg's dark room/ kitchen is the perfect metaphor for the creative process and makes for a brilliantly hued backdrop.
Daveed's creative talents are not limited to hip-hop however. Diggs is also an acclaimed actor and will soon be seen in Chinaka Hodge's debut play, Mirrors in Every Corner. The play is directed by award winning playwrite Marc Bamuthi Joseph and will run at San Francisco's Intersection for the Arts from Feb 25 - Mar 21. Stay tuned for 38th Notes' play review.
