Oakland Elsewhere...

Oakland Elsewhere is 38thNotes' newest reoccurring post, and will feature an assortment of Oakland/Bay Area affiliated articles or videos from around the country. If you ever see any interesting stories about Oakland in a national publication, or see The Town referenced in a random video, shoot us an email and let us know. Enjoy the first installment.

Uptown Oakland in Sunset Magazine
Every so often The Town surfaces in the pages of a West Coast staple, Sunset Magazine. This go round they focus on the Uptown by mentioning Picán, Mua, Mimosa, Flora, The Layover, The Fox, The Den and the Art Murmur, in addition to the required stroll around Lake Merritt. None of this is news to Oaklanders in the know, but it's always nice to get a little shine with a wider reach.

Lupe Fiasco Mentions Oakland
Mistah FAB mentioned in an exclusive 38thNotes/ WarriorsWorld interview that Lupe and him had a lot of respect for each other. Well obviously Lupe has some knowledge about FAB's locale too, because he references Oakland in this new interview. In an interview with MTV he compares Haiti to Chicago, and a lot of other cities, including Oakland.

Lake Chalet in NY Times
38thNotes reviewed Lake Chalet when it first opened, but the New York Times also wrote their own review of the relatively new restaurant.  We both came to pretty much the same conclusion, but as a certain Oakland mayorol candidate says, there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Covering nearly 10,000 square feet, the Lake Chalet offers indoor and outdoor dining areas. (A dock patio is open year-round, and a less-formal menu is available there in warmer months.) In the main dining room, heavy wood shares space with old metal rafters for a pump-house-chic effect. A fireplace roars in the Lake Room, where tables overlook the lake. Outside, this sleek, grown-up look gives way to a more youthful scene, as people mingle steps from the water on the dock.

Nnamdi Amomugha on "Friday Night Lights"
Besides being one of the best Corner backs in the NFL, Nnamdi Asomugha looks as if he wants to add acting to his long list of accomplishments. Tomorrow he will be representing the Raiders in the Pro Bowl, but earlier this year he appeared in the critically acclaimed show "Friday Night Lights. "Skip to the 6:20 mark and let us know if you think Nnamdi has the acting chops for a future career.

Cal's Max Zhang in USA Today
Check out this article about 7'3" Cal basketball player Max Zhang in the USA Today. Zhang is from China and is currently adjusting to the life of an American student athlete. Although he doesn't get a lot of playing time, he has become a fan favorite for the Blue and Gold faithful. Check out the excerpt below and hit the above link for the whole story.
In a December interview with a blogger for BearTalk, Zhang was asked about the strangest thing he had seen in Berkeley. He mentioned campus protests. He says he hasn't been involved in a protest at Cal, but Zhang reflects on the history of protests in Berkeley — the student movement of the 1960s demanding free speech on campus and its anti-Vietnam War protests — and says, "I'm really proud of the fact that this school started (those) movements."
