"Betta Chick"- Nova Boy Ft. E-Molly & Lem Doog

If you've tuned into KMEL at all the last week, chances are you've heard "Betta Chick" and done a double take at the song's mention of Bay Area vocalists like Netta B, Goapele, Keyshia Cole and Jimmie Reign. Let's face it, KMEL hasn't exactly supported a gang of local music since the death of hyphy, so that makes the debut of West Oakland's Nova Boy that much more of a success story. The song is called "Betta Chick" and it started to get spins on KMEL last week after Big Von heard Nova Boy, E-Molly and Lem Doog perform at the Pink Diamond. So if you're ready for a girl with a little more to offer and you appreciate good local music, please call in and request "Betta Chick" on KMEL.

Music was not a big priority for Nova Boy growing up, but as he got older, he started laying down tracks and eventually was one of the founding members of APB, along with Vell4Short whose song “Shirt & Baggy Pants” we featured a while back. One of the reasons I especially like him is because he has a sound that is marketable nationally, yet still embraces Oakland. For example, the majority of the women he talks about in “Betta Chick” are musicians from the Bay. Nova will be a force to reckon with in the near future, so keep your ears open.

We have also learned that “Betta Chick” is not even his best song, so stay tuned to 38thnotes for the debut of his next banger in the very near future.
