The Brief Rap Careers of Oakland's Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, Brian Shaw & J.R. Rider

I recently posted an exclusive track from Oakland playground legend and future Hall-of-Famer Jason Kidd, but I was holding out on you!

On a 1994 rap compilation album entitled B-Ball's Hidden Secrets that featured the music of NBA players, Oakland had four representatives present. St. Joe's star Jason (J-Kidd) Kidd was joined by Skyline grad Gary (GP/The Glove) Payton, former Encinal stand-out Isaiah (J.R) Rider and the alias-less O'Dowd alumni Brian Shaw.
When we think of rapping ballers we tend to think Shaq & Kobe, but thankfully none of our boys are that bad. Here, the then rookie, Kidd kicks some life lessons with an assist from Digital Underground's Money B over an instrumental reminiscent of Ice Cube's "Today Was a Good Day."

"Living Large & Legal" features GP going in over a laid back Too $hort-esque G-Funk beat with an active bassline.

The relatively square Brian Shaw drops some auto-biographical verses over a mobb music track. You might think it an odd fit, but Mr Shaw pulls it off. That said, I hope his Lakers choke. No love for Kobe here on 38th Notes. Sorry kids.

Then finally, the Town hoodlum known as JR Rider rounds out Oakland's set with a track called "Funk in the Trunk"- The perfect accompaniment to his famous "East Bay Funk Dunk" that won the 1994 slam dunk contest. JR bid adieu to basketball too early do to his involvement in the streets, but one could have probably predicted that based on this track.
