In a blogosphere that is obsessed with being first to post, leak or write about everything under the sun, it is important that we also look back from time to time. Let's face it there are some amazing, cool and, in this case, funny things to recall in Oakland's great history.
Consider this the first installment of 38th Notables- a reoccurring feature that will highlight influential, memorable, under-appreciated and/or random people, songs, and things that have played a part in the history of the Oakland Bay Area. Clearly this is a random place to start, but who can forget whistle tips? More importantly, who can forget Bubb Rubb and Lil Sis?
Granted, whistle tips were annoying, but hats off to Oakland's urban ingenuity to find another way to contribute to Cali car culture and show out within the law (until they were banned). Also kudos to KRON to keep both sides of this segment comically stereotypical. Hood black people meet square white people- job well done guys.
And just in case you wanted to more actively participate in the comedic stylings of Mr Bubb Rubb, I give you the online soundboard featuring chopped audio clips of all your favorite Bubb Rubb phrases. Leave it to the internet to DTM.
RIP Whistle Tips
