I have to take this opportunity to shout out Youth Radio for actually speaking on the Oscar Grant situation and being a forum for outcry and analysis. In contrast, the supposed "people's station" remains mum. I understand that KMEL is controlled by Clear Channel, and is thus completely disinterested in stirring controversy, but shame on them for masquerading as representation of the people. I suppose Street Soldiers is supposed to satiate our hunger for substance on the radio, but that meager concession is no longer sufficient. I would press KMEL to wake up, but corporate money is known to speak a bit louder than a few dissenting voices in The Town.
As such, send KMEL the way of FUBU, Sauconys and Old Navy windbreakers. Instead, tune into www.youthradio.org to hear up and coming artists, local music and real talk on the issues that matter. Special shout out to my boy DNastee, the host of the YR show Streets is Talking, for speaking on the Oscar Grant situation and giving local artists and community members a place to speak their mind. A huge benefit of Youth Radio is that most of their shows are archived allowing you to go back and listen to streams at your convenience.Perhaps more importantly, supporting YR means supporting youth. At a time when young people are dying at an alarming rate and falling prey to the "justice" system, it's of the utmost importance that we support them doing postive things in the community. It's easy to watch the media protray us in a negative light and accept it because we know of nothing that disproves it, but that rationale is a product of laziness and indifference. Give our youth the chance to speak their piece and bless them with an audience. Below are links to some interviews on Oscar Grant's execution and the aftermath conducted by DNastee and the YR crew. Interview with DJ Backside (Bay Area DJ)
Interview with Salvin Moore (Oscar's friend)

Executions are premeditated, communally agreed to and sanctioned by the state. Oscar Grant was killed. Even if his killer is acquitted (which I think he won't be, I'm betting on some form of manslaughter) it still wouldn't be an execution, though it was and continues to be a travesty.
