New Music: Goapele: "Nothing Compares 2 U"

Last weekend when Goapele took the stage for the Sundays In The Redwoods concert series at Woodminster Amphitheater, she was not only backed by her stellar band, she was also joined by conductor Michael Morgan and the Oakland East Bay Symphony. Her hour plus set swooned and glistened in the Oakland Hills 90 degree heat, as Goapele commandeered the shady stage in a classy but playful black and white polka-dot dress.

The highlights of the afternoon were two new songs and two covers. Her melancholy "Tears On My Pillow" always leaves audiences weak, and her street single "Right Here" is a sultry slap that always leaves faces twisted and heads nodding. But in addition to these cuts from her forthcoming Milk & Honey album, she also blew people away with two beautiful covers. The first, a lush orchestral rendition of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," opened the show and showcased Goapele's smokey voice digging a little deeper than usual.

The second cover was a heartfelt rendition of Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U." Here she has released her version over Kanye West's "Runaway" beat, creating a hauntingly heartbroken epic that creeps up on you. The emotion packed into this song paired with Kanye's bluesy synthesizers will surely trigger whatever post-break-up heartache you might harbor, so be careful.
