Thursday Throwback: Souls of Mischief: "93 Til Infinity" + Young Gully's Remix

Depending on who you ask, you can't call this old school. But it is indeed a throwback. I was in first or second grade when it dropped so I can't speak to kicking it listening to this song, or how folks reacted when it came on. What I do know is that I've always loved it. I know that when it plays the crew acts as if this was our house party or Sunday kick it jam back in the day. And while I'm not much of a "golden era this, golden era that" type, the song does make me feel some kind of way.

Souls of Mischief hit the Billboard 100 with "93 Til Infinity" off of their debut album by the same name. And in 1998 The Source put the debut on its 100 Best Rap Albums list. More recently, Kanye cited it as a major influence when he performed it at his Vh1 Story Tellers special a couple years back. But even with those facts, you still get the feeling that track and album were slept on.

"Hailing from the streets of  East Oakland, Ca..."

And just to update an old classic for the present day, Young Gully weighed in with this remake. The remix of "93 Til" features Pep Love and Hongry, lending credence to Gully's reinterpretation. The video was directed by the young and prodigious Aris Jerome. For more Young Gully, download his mixtape, The Definition of Gas right HERE.

I turned 6 years old in '93, so like Luke I can't really claim to remember the release of either song or album. However, doubt me if you wish but I have a distinct memory of riding in the car with my babysitter hearing the original song on Wild 107.7, and I remember loving it. Could I have told you who Souls of Mischief were? No, I wasn't that cool in Kindergarden or 1st grade. Nor could I have told you the significance or meaning of any of the lyrics.

But the song left a distinct impression on me nonetheless. It was maybe a half dozen years ago when I came across it and nostalgia triggered on me at an unprecedented level. The whole album is pretty amazing--both 93 Till Infinity and Never No More are two of those songs that are in my list of favorite songs I could never put above or below any others in that category.

This new remix is legit too. Props to Young Gully and Hongry--both of whom I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of--and Pep Love for brining a true classic back into the light.

On a side note, does anyone know where either this new video or the original one were filmed? This is hella random, but the video on the song That's When Ya Lost was mostly filmed at John Hinkel Park, about 5 blocks from where I grew up in the Berkeley hills. That's definitely not where the original 93 Till Infinity video was filmed, but I'm all but certain that this new remix was partly filmed at Indian Rock Park, which is also basically right where I grew up. If anyone knows for sure any of the locations where either or both of these video were shot, I'm hella curious.

The old video looks like it was filmed in Yosemite.
