I'm sick and tired of the Oakland Police thinking they have carte blanche to harm folks. I understand that this guy was drunk, taunting the cops and probably refusing to leave the premises, but there was no one around him and he was not posing a serious physical threat. Then right after the man is hand cuffed, an officer tases him from behind, causing him to fall down the stairs without the ability to brace himself. You would think that after all the heat that OPD have faced in the recent past over their community relations, that they would be a bit smarter. But alas, they continue to disappoint.
Note to OPD: Shoot and tase only when necessary. When a lone drunkard is sitting by himself and you have 6 or 7 police and security personnel at hand, using such force is inappropriate. I understand that certain situations warrant that response (I've been at an A's game when a fan should have been tased), but this was not one of them.

WTF! not again, PLEASE not again. i did not want to watch but alas felt i must. SO unnecessary. they really willing to risk somebody's life for nothing, because yes tasers do kill.
This disgusts me.
Contempt of Cop is not a crime. One would have hoped that OPD would take the higher ground and shown some maturity and patience. These officers need to realize that Oakland is not 1930's Germany and the OPD isn't the gestapo. Enough with the facist BS.
Umm...I was sitting about 5 rows in front of him and he was actually a Texas fan and he kept yelling obnoxiously. The usher who had been very nice went over and made a joke. And dude flipped out screaming and swearing saying get outta my fing face and calling him the n word. They called security and he was still screaming and swearing. So the police came and while they were trying to put handcuffs on him he kept trying to swing at them. So they tasered him and he fell and hit his head.
I say they had every right to taze that SOB!!! If he had called me the n word, I would've whooped some ass!!
if that stops people from acting a fool at a ballgame, then I am all for it. that being said, there must be a right and wrong way to tase. it seemed like that last shot before being waved off was gratuitous.
Don't judge without being in their shoes. Maybe they had every right to use the taser. I'm not saying it's right, or wrong. I'm just saying that, you have to consider the other side of the stories. Don't make assumptions based on other people's opinions.
A few reasons cops use tasers:
1. Less likely to cause permanent bodily harm than using a nightstick or a joint lock to restrain a suspect. And that means less likely to injure both the suspect and the cop.
2. Less likely to cause lawsuits.
People don't like tasers because the results are creepy looking and because taser targets look totally helpless. It's an emotional reaction. But have you ever seen cops restrain a suspect without using a taser? That can actually be much uglier.
It depends how the taser get used.. you say it causes less bodily harm? death is pretty serious to me, but maybe not to you
No, he was not swinging at the cops. The cops are abusing their power, not just in Oakland. A Husband and his pregnant wife in Virginia were tasered by the cops, in their own backyard! The police were called to the home for excessive noise!! smh
Sure looks like an appropriate use of force to me. Guy was drunk and disorderly, uncooperative, was asked to leave by security, refused, police were called, he escalated to resisting arrest and assualted an officer.
He's lucky that OPD are so well trained they know which holster their guns are in, and which holster holds the TASER. Unlike BART police. I wish our neighborhoods had more cops to do the same, but they're all at the A's game!
Note to OPD: Keep up the great work.
