As a big Warriors fan, I am always excited when free agency rolls around because it gives the fan base hope for landing a big time player (even if the likelihood is low). But when I picked up the Tribune the other day, I was shocked to see that homegrown talent Leon Powe will be a free agent. Leon had a great season because Celtics star Kevin Garnett went down with an injury, allowing Leon to fill the void with his scrappy play and muscular presence down low.He will never be a star in this league, but he has proven that he can be a solid contributor off the bench. Last year Leon averaged 17.5 minutes per game and scored almost 8 points a game to go along with 5 rebounds. The only downside is that Leon had surgery on his knee last year after hurting him self early in the playoffs. This might scare some teams off because he has had multiple knee surgeries in the past, but Leon has been able to battle back each time.
Some of you might be saying, “it would be a good story, but is it realistic for the Warriors?” I believe it is. The Warriors have Anthony Randolph, Brandon Wright, Ronny Turiaf, and Andris Biedrins at the power forward and center positions. With the exception of Turiaf, none of those guys are bangers. Randolph is an energetic young kid, but lacks the muscle to go up against the real big men down low. As it says in the Tribune article, Leon could be back in February, which would give him a couple months to try his knee out. All the Warriors would have to do is give him a cheap one-year deal with a team option for the next year, and see if he could help them out at the end of the season.I think Leon would jump at the chance to come back home and be in a place where he is used to recovering. I might be a sucker for Leon because he went to Oakland Tech and Cal, or because he is such a great guy, but I hope the Warriors consider this. Let us know what you think. The official campaign to bring Leon back to Oakland starts now!!

Leon Powe needs to be in the 'town. He is the kind of guy you can build a team around, even a city around. Much respect.
